Associate Professor (P.I.)
Mari Kawaguchi, PhD
I have traveled all over Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa, as well as Sweden, Canada, and the Philippines, in search of adult fish and fertilized eggs.
Using collected samples, I study the evolution of brood pouches in seahorses and pipefishes, and the evolution of adaptation to hatching environments in teleosts. My hobbies include drawing fish illustrations and making fish paper crafts. I also collect ballpoint pen balls that are smaller than the size of fish eggs. I would appreciate it if you would not throw away used ballpoint pens and give them to me. Contact address: k-mari@sophia.ac.jp |

They often wrap their tails around something and don't move, but their eyes move restlessly in search of food, etc. They seem to get restless unless they've got something to hold onto. They sometimes wrap their tail around themselves or other seahorses, but other seahorses usually take exception and try to free themselves. They then sometimes battle to see who can wrap themselves around each other even more tightly. I never get tired of seeing such behavior, I find it healing. |
