Professor (P.I.)

Mari Kawaguchi, PhD

Mari Kawaguchi I have traveled widely across Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa, as well as Sweden, Canada, and the Philippines, in search of adult fish and fertilized eggs. Using these samples, I study the evolution of brood pouches in seahorses and pipefishes, as well as adaptive evolution of hatching environments in teleosts.
My hobbies include drawing fish illustrations, beadwork, embroidery, eraser stamps, and paper crafts (origami architecture). I also collect ballpoint pen balls smaller than fish eggs. If you have a used pen, I would be happy to take it!

Seahorse

seahorse They often wrap their tails around something and don't move, but their eyes move restlessly in search of food, etc. They seem to get restless unless they've got something to hold onto. They sometimes wrap their tail around themselves or other seahorses, but other seahorses usually take exception and try to free themselves. They then sometimes battle to see who can wrap themselves around each other even more tightly. I never get tired of seeing such behavior, I find it healing.
